Violion maestro Lalgudi Jayaraman & veena vidushi Kalpakam Swaminathan honoured
CHENNAI, November 10: The annual December music season is still a few days away. Yet, the stage is already set with a right beginning this year. And, it has commenced in an appropirate manner by honouring violin maestro Lalgudi G. Jayaraman and veena vidushi Kalpakam Swaminathan, two outstanding artistes of our time.
While maestro Lalgudi Jayaraman was presented the life time achievement award by Carnatica Archival Centre for Music and Dance on Sunday, vidushi Kalpakam Swaminathan was honoured with the Maharajapuram Viswanantha Iyer Memorial Award on Saturday. The award for Lalgudi Jayaraman was presented as a part of the Bharat Sangeet Ustav 2008 organized by Carnatica. The venna artiste was given the award at the inauguration of the Trust's 23rd anniversary celebrations.
Carnatica also confered the "consistent performer of the decade'' title on vocalist T.V. Sankaranarayhanan. The "People's choice'' award went to Aruna Sairam. Bombay Sisters C. Saroja and C. Lalitha were chosen as the best duo performers by Carnatica. The 'violinist of the year' award went to Nagai Muralidharan, "persussionsit of the year'' award to Tiruvarur Bhaktavatsalam, "personality of the year'' award to Srimushnam Raja Rao, "support artiste of the year'' award to S. Karthick and "young star'' award to Master M. Balamuralikrishna.
Honouring senior musicians: Similarly, the Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer Trust, too, announced awards in various categories. It honoured seniour musicians Chathalapathi Soundararaja Bagavathar, Rukman Rama and Thanjavur Ramamurthy with awards. The "youth excellence award'' was presented to vocalist S. Mahathi, mridangist Arun Prakash and violinist Sethalai Sivakumar.
