Isai Velvi 2008 declares winners of music contest

CHENNAI, August 21: The International Society for Laya Awareness, an organization promoted by ghatam artiste V. Suresh, has announced the winners of the maiden Isai Velvi 2008 concert contest. It has picked three best groups.
The first prize goes to Vaishnavi Ananthararayanan (vocal), V. Anand (violin), Vijay Natesan (mridangam) and Balaji Chandran (ghatam). It carries a cash award of Rs. 3,000. The second prize goes to Venkata Nagarajan (vocal), T.S. Dinesh (violin) and Kottayam Sinesh (mridangam). They get a cash of Rs.2,000. The third prize is landed by R. Kapalathika (vocal), K.P. Nandini (violin) and S.C. Venkatesh (mridangam). They will get a cash prize of Rs. 1,000. Besides winning cash prizes, the three best groups will also get an exclusive opportunity to perform at the December music festival of ISLA.
The Society has also picked three best groups among the remaining contestants. They, too, will get an opportunity to perform in the ensuing December festival. The three groups are: Arthi Kumar (vocal), R. Rahul (violin) and Trivandrum Hariharan (mridangam); Shreya Devnath (violin), R. Hemant (mridangam) and S. Krishna (ghatam); and T. Kalaimagan (vocal), S. Kamakshi (violin) and N.C. Bhartwaj (mridangam).
The Society has also announced that Sriranjani Santhanagopalan. L. Srividhya and Ragini Sri have been chosen as the winners of the Noteworthy Vocalist Award. The winners of the Noteworthy Instrumentalist Award are: V. Raghul Srinivasan (violin) and Bombay Anand (violin).The Noteworthy Percussionist Award goes to Vijay Natesan (mridangam), N.C. Bharatwaj (mridangam) and Nerkunam S. Shankar (kanjira).
