CHENNAI, February 27: Eminent musicologist and Carnatic musician Sulochana Pattabhiraman died here today after a brief illness. She was 76. She was a recipient of the Tamil Nadu Government’s Kalaimamani award. She had also been conferred the title Sangeeta Kala Acharya by Music Academy.

She was known to be a staunch believer in tradition. Yet, she was ever willing to appreciate newer things. She spent her early years in Tiruchi, where she got her initial music lessons from vocalists R.V. Subramaniam and Kalyankrishna Bhagavathar. She also had training from Sathur Subramaniam. After coming to Chennai, she became a student of N. Balasubramaniam. She had been a regular contributor to the The Hindu Friday Review. Her reviews were rated high by artistes and rasikas alike.
